DRACO/ SAPIENZA – KAEBUP / ERASMUS PLUS
Study meeting
Innovative teaching and urban form practicing.
Thursday 27 October 2022 – h.10.00 CET
Faculty of Architecture – Sapienza, University of Rome
Aula Magna – Piazza Fontanella Borghese
This meeting, organized by the Draco doctorate of the Sapienza, University of Rome, will present two different and complementary experiments in teaching urban form developed inside the Kaebup European research, aimed at demonstrating the value of these studies in design practice.
The first, the ISSUM summer school held in Rome from 20 to 28 June 2022 in the Ghetto area, is based on the need for theory and method in urban design; the second, the BMW workshop held in Porto from 26 to 29 July, is based, instead, on the practical reasons of the professional practice. Kaebup research (Knowledge Alliance for Evidence-Based Urban Practices) main objective is to create an international educational and training method on urban form studies aimed at the professional activity of architect. Kaebup’s partners comprise HEIs, NGOs and enterprises from different European cities, who have expertise of evidence-based design to benefit from the tools that research can provide to enterprises and from the experience of evidence-based practice.

SAPIENZA – UNIVERSITY OF ROME
This lecture is in two parts. The first one proposes a morphological reading grounded on the town-plan concept. The concept is applied in the analysis of Lindo Vale, a 19thcentury street in the city of Porto, Portugal. The second describes how this morphological approach informs the design of a new house in Lindo Vale. It explicitly addresses a fundamental question of the relationship between analysis and design of the urban landscape: what to conserve and what to change? The specific nature of this building as a design response to a particular urban landscape is highlighted through a brief comparison with two other buildings designed by its authors in the city of Porto – one in a medieval street, the other in an early 20th century street.

GOALS
The course aims to teach a method of reading the built landscape through the knowledge of the forming processes common to urban fabrics and buildings. The basic notions of organism and process will be used to read the built landscape.
The main purpose of the typological study proposed by the course is the identification of the characters of the built environment and the recognition of the formation and transformation processes , having as ultimate goal the architectural design.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The course will consist of:
EXAMINATION
Students will be evaluated through an oral test.
The student will be free to choose one of the following forms of exam:
1. presentation of the work carried out during the course on one of the themes included in the program. The student’s work will be followed periodically by the teachers and may also contain a simple project proposal as an example of the theoretical study.
2. Discussion on one of the theoretical topics listed in the course program.
The students will also be free to present all the works they consider useful for evaluation.

The course aims to teach a method of reading the built landscape through the knowledge of the forming processes common to urban fabrics and buildings. Despite their great variety and complexity, in fact, some common and continuous formative principles can be recognized in such processes. The basic notions of organism and process will be used to read the built landscape. The term “reading” does not indicate the simple and neutral recording of phenomena, but requires the active contribution of the reader, creating a synthesis of the will of the subject and the attitude of the object. The main purpose of the typological study proposed by the course is precisely the identification of the qualitative differences contained in the characters of the built reality, the recognition of the process of their formation and transformation, their internal dialectic of extensive exchanges and integrations.
